Joseph Ford – Early Life

Ancestry.com. Birmingham, England, Church of England Baptisms, 1813-1912

1830 – Baptism of Joseph Ford
Two months later on December 27 in 1830, the baby was baptised in the St. Martin’s Church in Birmingham.  His parents were noted as Thomas Bate Ford and Elizabeth Ford, living at Edgbaston Street, Birmingham and Thomas Bate Ford was a Japanner.

1851 – Census Joseph Ford
At the age of 20 years, Joseph, living with his widowed mother, Elizabeth, nee Garmans, was unmarried and working as an Air Gun Maker.  His mother, aged 44 years, was earning money as a Washerwoman whilst his 15-year-old sister, Mary Ann Ford was employed as a Solderer.  Their home address was 5 Hospital Street, Birmingham.

Ann Turner - Her Early Life

1832 - Birth
Ann Turner, born on March 13 in 1832 was the daughter of James Turner and Hannah Stanley.  They lived in Birmingham.
Name:                                                 Ann Turner
Age:                                                      5
Birth Date:                                         13 Mar 1832
Baptism Date:                                   30 Jun 1837
Baptism Place:                                  Birmingham, St Philip, Warwickshire, England
Parish as it Appears:                         Birmingham, St Philip
Father:                                                James Turner
Mother:                                              Hannah Turner
Ancestry.com. Birmingham, England, Church of England Baptisms, 1813-1912
1837 – Baptism of Ann Turner
On June 30, 1837 at St. Phillip’s Church, Birmingham, five-year-old Ann was baptised, along with two of her siblings - Henry, born November 1, 1829 and Lucy, born March 6, 1836.  Her parents, James and Hannah Turner were living in Howard Street, Birmingham and James worked as a Gilt Toy Maker.

1841 - Census Ann Turner
The 1841 Census in the parish of St. George, Birmingham, saw 9-year-old Ann Turner living with her father, James Turner, 35, still working as a Gilt Toy Maker, at Hospital Street, Birmingham.  The rest of her family on this night included brothers, George, 14 and Henry, 11 and her younger sister, Lucy aged 6.    I haven’t been able to prove it, but I suspect Ann’s mother, Hannah, died just prior to the census.

The area in which Ann and her family were living must have been very poor, as looking at the census you can see many people described as either ‘pauper, pay from parish (church), widow on relief’ etc.

Joseph Ford & Ann Turner – Their Life Together

1857 - Marriage
I believe that just prior to the marriage of Joseph Ford and Ann Turner, Ann was working as a general servant in a household in Birmingham.  At the time of their marriage on January 5, 1857 at St. Phillip’s Church in Birmingham, Joseph, age 26, was a Gun Finisher who as he signed his name, had had the benefit of some education, whilst Ann, aged 23, is only described as a spinster and could not sign her name.

Joseph gave his father’s name as Thomas Bate Ford, working as a Japanner and living in Hospital Street, Birmingham.  Ann’s father, James Turner was a brass founder, living in Great Russell Street.

Witnesses to the marriage were Emma Seedman and George Turner.

1857 – Birth of Son, George James Ford
The records indicate that Joseph and Ann’s first child, was born just three days after their marriage on January 8 whilst living at Court, Brearley Street West, Birmingham.  It was not uncommon at the time for brides to walk down the aisle whilst heavily pregnant.  Once the bond between the two had been publicly announced, it was considered reasonable for them to engage in sexual activity prior to their formal marriage.

1859 - Birth of Son, Joseph Samuel Ford
My great-grandfather, Joseph Samuel Ford, followed his older brother on May 27 in 1859 whilst the family were living at Back of 78 Edward Street, Birmingham.

1861 - Census
Two years later in 1861, the census showed the family living as lodgers in a house in Hospital Street that provided accommodation to several other families.  Conditions must have been fairly squalid in this house – no doubt one of the back-to-back houses.   Joseph Ford was working as a Gun Sights Filer.

1861 – Death of Son, George James Ford
No doubt due to the close living arrangements, contagious diseases spread quickly, particularly among the young and very old.  Thus, on June 22 in 1861 at the age of 4 years and 6 months, Joseph and Ann’s first-born son, George James Ford, died at 33 Court, Hospital Street, Birmingham from the measles.  The little boy was buried at Saint Martin’s Church in Birmingham.

1864 – Death of Joseph Ford

Just three years later, and Joseph Ford also died.  His trade was a Gun Sight Filer and the resulting metal dust probably contributed to his early death at 34 years from consumption.

1864 – Birth of Daughter, Harriett Ford

Born seven months after the death of her father, Harriet Ford made it into this world on September 21 in 1864.

1866 – Re-Marriage of Ann Ford, nee Turner
After the death of her husband, Joseph Ford in 1864, with 7-year-old Joseph Samuel Ford and an eighteen-month-old daughter, Harriett, Ann remarried on February 27, 1866 at the parish church, All Saints in Birmingham.  Her husband was John Bryant, a 43-year-old widower and a Tool Maker.  Both Ann and John lived at Smith Street, Birmingham.

Ann’s new husband, John Bryant was 43 years old, also a widower, a Tool Maker, also living in Smith Street.  His father was John Bryant, working as a Tarpolean (tarpaulin) Maker. Little Joseph Samuel was now about 7 years old.

1871 - Census
Five years later in 1871 when I checked the census entry, I thought 12-year-old Joseph Samuel Ford was missing from his mother’s new family.  But I think it more likely that Joseph had become Joseph Bryant, taking on his stepfather’s surname.  His mother, now Ann Bryant was 39 years old and lived in another Back-to-Back house at 147 Upper Hospital Street, 20 Court with her husband, John Bryant, aged 49 years and his son, Edward Bryant, 16 and our Joseph Samuel Ford, masquerading as Joseph Bryant, 12.  Harriet Bryant, aged 6 was a child of the marriage of Ann and Joseph Ford also has a surname change.  The two younger children, William, 4 years and Emma, 6 months were from the marriage to John Bryant.

1881 - Census
Ten years on, and Ann and John Bryant are still alive and living at 172-Wheeler Street, 16 Court, 3 House in Birmingham.  Joseph Samuel Ford has left home – little Emma Elizabeth Bryant died in 1872 – leaving only William, aged 14, at home.

Where is Harriett who would be 16 years now?  Is this Harriet living with another Bryant relative?
