1916 – Military Service
Linden applied for military service on June 5, 1916 and gave
his occupation as chef and his current address as 57 Surrey Road, South
Yarra. His military application showed
Linden was 28 years and 5 months old at time of application, was 5 feet 5
inches tall, weighed 129 pounds. He had
a fresh complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair, freckled arms and a birthmark
in the small of his back.
He left Australia for England on October 21, 1916 and served
in France for most of 1917. Towards the
end of 1917, he was transferred back to England to the King George Military
Hospital to recover from diphtheria.
Early in 1918 he re-joined his unit in France and was eventually
transferred back to Australia in April 1919.
He was discharged in August 1919
.
Linden had served in the 3rd Pioneer Battalion
and was awarded a British War Medal on July 19, 1921 and the Victory Medal on
February 13, 1923.

Before the Chief Justice. (Tuesday, 15th March.) WARREN V. WARREN.Linden Melville Warren, 32, of Richardson-Street, Middle Park, chef, for whom Mr. H. Woolf appeared, sued for divorce from Grace Warren, 26, on the ground of desertion by her and her misconduct with Reginald Brown, co-respondent. Petitioner said he married respondent in May,1913, and there was one child living of the union.Respondent, about December 1915, said she was tired of being home and wanted to take a situation. He said that was not necessary, but she left the premises. About two months later he met her. She then asked to be taken back. He agreed, and they lived together again. But twelve months afterwards she left home once more. She returned a second time.On 3rd June 1916, witness went to the war, returning in August 1919. He had only seen her twice since the latter date. During his absence at the war respondent gave birth to a female child, of which petitioner was not the father. Lin took his
little girl, Muriel and placed her in the care of his sister, Ivy Edwards, having divorced Grace in
1921. He later
married Annie Murphy.

After Linden’s divorce from his first wife, Grace Aimers, Linden’s daughter, Muriel, aged 9 years went to live with Linden and his second wife. But not for long. Shortly afterwards, Muriel was placed in a convent in Bendigo to live with the nuns where she was employed as a housemaid and laundry-maid. Even after Muriel became an adult, she was forced to continue to live at the convent where she did all the laundry and other chores.
My mother, Iris Ella Warren, nee Ford told me about Muriel. She said that Muriel was allowed to leave the convent to visit her family in Melbourne for a day now and then and she visited my mother and also my auntie, Muriel Irene Warren, nee Ford (mum’s sister, known as Rene). My mother said that Muriel could starch and iron clothes like no other person she knew – with such skill and expertise. No matter how hard my mother tried, she could never achieve the same results as Muriel with the laundry.
Eventually, Muriel escaped the convent and went to live with her uncle, Leonard Leslie Warren and his wife, Burdett, nee Launder at 97 Flinders Street, Thornbury (my grandparents).
Unfortunately, pressure from her parents and the nuns and priests became too much for her and Muriel felt she would never be free to live her own life, so rather than go back to the convent, while she was visiting my auntie, Muriel Irene Warren, she committed suicide in 1943 aged 28 years by taking an overdose of aspirin. This is family hearsay as I have not been able to obtain a copy of an inquest into her death.

It is interesting that although Linden denied that he was
the father of this baby, and indeed rested his divorce case on his not being
the father, his name nevertheless appears as the father in the birth records,
although this could have been recorded by Grace Aimers as the informant for the
birth.
Also, when I was researching this family, I was told that
this little girl had died shortly after birth, but I subsequently found the
following marriage, which may possibly relate to ‘our’ Dorothy Enid May
Warren. Without the marriage certificate
to ascertain parents’ names, I am not able to verify this.
